February is National Children's Dental Health Month

Having children means you stay busy and sometimes dental health can be easily overlooked with everything else going on. February is National Children's Dental Health Month, during this month the American Dental Association (ADA) raises awareness about the importance of oral health. One of the best ways to educate children about dental health and maintaining good oral hygiene is to familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of child dentistry. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

Nutrition plays an important role in good dental health. Eating nutritional snacks and limiting the amount of sugary drinks will help to prevent plaque from forming on the teeth. Dental decay is the number one chronic disease in children.

It is the recommendation of both The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and The American Academy of Pediatrics, that children begin going to the dentist by the age of one. Parents use to be told to wait until children were three years of age to visit a dentist. However, by this age, many children already have multiple decayed teeth, that are often un-restorable and require extraction. The main goal of the age one dental visit is prevention. Many food and drink habits that start early can be altered to promote both dental and overall health. So take time this month to schedule your children for their first or annual appointment.

The ADA has free online resources that can help you with oral health ideas including coloring and activity sheets that can make educating your kids about oral care fun.
