March is National Kidney Awarness Month
March is National Kidney Awareness Month, and March 11, 2010 is World Kidney Day. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of kidney disease, you're at risk for chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Chronic kidney disease includes conditions that damage your kidneys and decrease their ability to keep you healthy. If kidney disease gets worse, wastes can build to high levels in your blood and make you feel sick. You can develop complications like high blood pressure, anemia (low blood count), weak bones, poor nutritional health and nerve damage. Kidneys filter your blood. They remove wastes and extra water. When the kidneys are diseased, they stop doing these jobs and wastes build up, damaging the body. If not treated, kidney disease can lead to kidney failure. Kidney disease also increases your risk of having heart and blood vessel disease. These problems may happen slowly over a long period of time. Chronic kidney disease may be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders. More than 26 million Americans, one in nine adults have kidney disease. Millions more are at increased risk for getting it, and most don't know it. Early detection and treatment can often keep chronic kidney disease from getting worse.
